From the Bench of the President

We are well along into our 15th week of repotting here in the nursery. Tulips, Ume, Cherry, Quince, and Azalea are all bringing flowers. Many Japanese Maples are in full leaf. Amur Maples are in full leaf. Everything else is full of big fat buds. The frogs and mosquitoes are out and about.
As I write this note we are leaving for Oroville to dig up big trees and plant some more little ones. We are watching the materials we gathered last October in the mountains for signs of life. There are about 5000 little whips we have pulled from the seed beds and we are mixing soils like crazy. The big fundraiser at Lake Merritt is coming up 2/21 & 22 and we will be travelling down there to be vendors. Everybody is placing their order for soil and trees so we can load up the van and save them a trip up here to the hills. The Golden Statements article about Bjorn’s visit has been completed and as soon as it is published we can get our $800 back from the Golden State Bonsai Federation.

February is also the time the club collects membership dues. The cost is the same as last year $40 per family.  This money goes for aluminum and copper wire, rent for our new meeting place, soil for re-potting, raffle items, to bring in bonsai artists to do demonstrations, and to cover the cost for the main dish’s at our summer and winter parties.  Please see Sue Hom at our January meeting to sign up for your 2015 membership.

This is a reminder that we have a new meeting place for our February meeting as well as a new starting time.  On February 26th we will meet at the:                                                                                                         Cameron Park Community Center                                                                   2502 Country Club Drive                                                                                     Cameron Park, CA. 95682                                                                                     Classroom B, from 7:00 to 9:00pm, on the 4th Thursday of each month.                                                                                                                                   We are responsible for clean up after our meetings so if you can bring a cloth to cover the table you will be working on and a broom and dustpan if you have one.

Tips & Techniques

Tips and Techniques by Scott Chadd

Be aware that we can still get night temperatures in the low 30’s or high 20’s and if your budding materials are not protected they are going to really take a beating. This first flush of leaves takes a lot of energy out of the tree. When they are killed by freezing weather the next leaves that come onto the tree are going to be a lot weaker and will not give you good fall color. If this happens it will be the 2nd year in a row we have lost our 1st batch of leaves. The trees can do this 4 or 5 times and then they begin to die. See you at the meeting we will be repotting deciduous trees
